Palau – March 14-27, 2020

Only 1 spot remaining!

Steve & Jolene Philbrook are heading back

palau

to Palau!  Join them on this journey to one of the world’s most amazing dive destinations!

We will be staying at the beautiful Palau Royale Resort. Home to its beautiful private beach, pool, restaurants, snorkeling area, marina, and much more!

All Superior rooms are located on the 2nd-4th floors, north wing of the hotel facing the harbor, where you can enjoy a quiet scenic view of the sailing yachts and cruisers. Enjoy the beautiful treescapes and flower beds around the pond viewed from the room’s balcony.

The Diving

palau

Palau is considered one of the world’s premier dive

destinations, with dozens of dive sites in a rare variety: walls with fascinating coral formations, reef corners where the currents attract sharks, rays and schooling fish, channels and other sandy bottom sites, tunnels, holes, caves and caverns, and plenty of WWII freighter and plane wrecks! From macro to mantas, Palau has it all!

Depending on your daily schedule, most boats return to Sam’s Tours around 3-4 p.m. You can hop right back into the water, with our offer of unlimited free dives at Sam’s Macro Wall right off our dock, where mandarin fish are often spotted mating at twilight.

One of the best loved sightings among divers is the Bumphead Parrot Fish (Bolbometopon muricatum). Often seen patrolling the reefs in schools of up to 20 or more, these encounters are favorites for many divers, but imagine an aggregation of nearly a thousand individuals!

The New Moon Expedition takes us to a remote dive site, where aggregations begin forming early in the morning. Awaiting the exact time for spawning, hundreds of Bumphead Parrot Fish from all around the area join one another for what is about to be an unforgettable event.

Philippines Oct 1 – Oct 10, 2020

*Dates are subject to change a day or two*

Join Drew Gerling and the “Tootsie Pop Divers” are back at in action to the incredible Philippines!

Marco Vincent is a luxurious dive resort situated at White Beach, Puerto Galera. Enjoy the breath taking scenery of Mindoro, where the luscious green mountains and the turquoise sea merge. Feel the warmth and friendliness from the resort’s attentive staff. The goal is to make sure that you have a unique and enriching vacation in their pristine natural environment.

Marco Vincent is located in the center of the world’s coral triangle meaning that they have some spectacular dive sites just minutes away from the resort.  This trip also includes a special trip to Verde Island!
Puerto Galera has over forty dive sites, it has a great variation of scuba diving. You can enjoy exhilarating drift dives, explore ship wrecks, and colorful coral gardens. For fans of critter hunting, Puerto Galera has some of the finest muck diving in Asia!

Verde Islandghost pipefish

The Batangas – Verde Island Channel is a very special place. It is currently ranked number two in the entire world for bio-diversity of species. Of all the dive sites accessible from Puerto Galera, none is more special than the pinnacles located at the east end of Verde Island. There are two usual dive sites, known as the Right Side Wall, and the Left Side Wall. The amount of fish life to be seen is nearly ten times the amounts seen at other sites in the Channel area. This is due to hot volcanic water that is venting from the area below the pinnacles.
The Right Side Wall is a steep wall dive, filled with the healthiest and beautiful corals you can find.  Immense schools of Blue Trigger fish stay just above and away from the reef.

At certain times of the year Sardines are so abundant, that divers refer to it as Sardine Rain. When you look up or away from the amazing corals, walls of these fish can be seen. There are many species of nudibranch to be found, as well as other types of macro life. At deeper depths, huge sea fans can be found. The currents on the right side tend to shift back and forth depending on tides. This area is considered the easier dive of the two.

The dive safaris to Coron Bay and Apo Reef will open up some amazing adventures!  Coron has a fleet of sunken Japanese ship wrecks, the natural wonders of Cathedral cave, and Barracuda Lake will take your breath away

Apo Reef is our special place for big fish encounters and deep blue water diving, look out for sharks, rays and massive schools of jacks and barracuda at this UNESCO heritage site.

Truk Lagoon Micronesia January 8-17, 2021

Join Erik Payeur on this amazing adventure diving the sunken WWII shipwrecks from the Japanese Imperial Navy in Truk Lagoon.

During World War II, Truk Lagoon was the Empire of Japan’s main base in the South Pacific theatre. Truk was a heavily fortified base for Japanese operations against Allied forces in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, serving as the forward anchorage for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN).

By early 1944, the U.S. forces amassed a huge armada of top line carriers, battleships, cruisers, destroyers and submarines for a major surprise sweep against Truk on February 16th, 17th and 18th. This attack, coded “Operation Hailstone”, caught the Japanese totally unaware, leading to one of the most successful U.S. engagements of WWII.

We will be staying at Blue Lagoon Resort. Blue Lagoon is a quant resort in Truk Lagoon. It still has many of the war artifacts on its premises. You will be surrounded by history the entire time you’re there. Truk Lagoon is considered to be the BEST wreck diving destination in the world! Dive iconic wreck like the Fijikawa Maru, Sankisan Maru, Nippo Maru, San Fransisco Maru, Hein Maru, Airplanes, and more!

Truk Lagoon offers diving for all levels on the same wrecks. Whether you’re a novice, seasoned, professional, or tech diver Truk Lagoon is for you! Nitrox, mixed gas, and extra tanks are available.

Raja Ampat & Lembeh Strait April 14-29, 2022

raja ampatJoin Steve & Jolene to these two amazing underwater paradises! Raja Ampat & Lembeh Strait offer some of the most diverse diving anywhere! From the incredible muck diving of Lembeh Strait to the spectacular coral reefs of Raja Ampat, these Indonesian destinations deliver an incredible experience you will never forget!

We start our journey at NAD on Lembeh Strait. Here you will encounter some of the world’s most unique and crazy critters. A macro photographer’s dream! Some of the critters you can encounter are various species of frogfish, cuttlefish, octopus (including the deadly Blue Ring), ornate pipefish, various crabs & shrimps, and many species of seahorses. NAD-Lembeh Resort and the Lembeh Strait are famous all over the world for the peerless macro and muck diving. NAD-Lembeh is expert in Photography.

The Lembeh Strait region offers more than just face-to-face encounters with weird and wonderful critters. We also have wall diving, technical diving, big fish dives but most importantly – a lot of muck and sand.

What is Blackwater Diving?

https://aquaventurescuba.com/black-water-diving/

Blackwater diving can be broadly described as dropping in the water and looking for planktonic / larval forms of marine creatures. Beyond that there are a few methods you can use depending on what depth of water you are prepared to hang over:

  • ‘Bonfire’ diving is where you put some lights on the sand to attract plankton.
  • ‘Blackwater drift’ is where you attach lights to a hang line and drift through deep water. All going well you will not see the bottom.
  • ‘Black ops’ this is the most difficult style where we drift without any strong lights in deep ocean water.

pygmy seahorseFrom here we need to go down and see what we can find. Your guide (remember you have 2 guests to one guide as standard at NAD Lembeh) will find things for you. If needed they will help you with their spotting torch as you take pictures to make sure you don’t lose the subject. After you’ve had a few shots they will ask you to switch out with your buddy.

Common subjects such as mantis shrimps, flounders and slow moving subjects just as jellyfish will be pointed out to you and the guide will move on to look for rarer subjects. Use this opportunity with flounders to practice the skill of not losing the subject. If the guide is staying right by you, and making a lot of noise you are shooting something special that he does not want to lose, and he will call over other divers to share the subject after an amount of time. Please also remember that the guide’s eyes are not hidden behind your camera, so they will try to position themselves in a way that minimises their exposure to camera flashes.

raja ampatFrom Lembeh we fly to Sorong and board the Damai 1 liveaboard for a week long trek through the unforgettable waters of Raja Ampat. From the Dampier Strait which manta rays frequent to Misool to find the Tasseled Wobbegong shark all swimming along some of the worlds most majestic and overwhelming reefs. Raja Ampat is a wide angle photographers playground offering endless photo opportunities

Diving in Raja Ampat is breathtaking, with the marine life thriving from the sea floor to the surface and the colourful reef teeming with activity. There are sites that are so pristine and packed with growth, that a photographer is hard-pressed to find a spot to place a steadying finger. Exotic sea life and macro critters abound of course, and photo opportunities border on overwhelming.

Raja Ampat liveaboard trips offer divers the opportunity to explore the entire region. You have the colourful soft coral areas around the southern islands of Misool with the opportunity to see sharks and mobula rays. In the north you have the world famous current rich Dampier Straits with iconic dive sites like Cape Kri and Blue Magic. In the east you can visit pristine coral gardens and climb to the viewpoint above the lagoon at Penemu. In the north you can dive with mantas at Kawe and go critter hunting in Aljui Bay.
