Join Steve & Jolene to these two amazing underwater paradises! Raja Ampat & Lembeh Strait offer some of the most diverse diving anywhere! From the incredible muck diving of Lembeh Strait to the spectacular coral reefs of Raja Ampat, these Indonesian destinations deliver an incredible experience you will never forget!

We start our journey at NAD on Lembeh Strait. Here you will encounter some of the world’s most unique and crazy critters. A macro photographer’s dream! Some of the critters you can encounter are various species of frogfish, cuttlefish, octopus (including the deadly Blue Ring), ornate pipefish, various crabs & shrimps, and many species of seahorses. NAD-Lembeh Resort and the Lembeh Strait are famous all over the world for the peerless macro and muck diving. NAD-Lembeh is expert in Photography.

The Lembeh Strait region offers more than just face-to-face encounters with weird and wonderful critters. We also have wall diving, technical diving, big fish dives but most importantly – a lot of muck and sand.

What is Blackwater Diving?

Blackwater diving can be broadly described as dropping in the water and looking for planktonic / larval forms of marine creatures. Beyond that there are a few methods you can use depending on what depth of water you are prepared to hang over:

  • ‘Bonfire’ diving is where you put some lights on the sand to attract plankton.
  • ‘Blackwater drift’ is where you attach lights to a hang line and drift through deep water. All going well you will not see the bottom.
  • ‘Black ops’ this is the most difficult style where we drift without any strong lights in deep ocean water.

pygmy seahorseFrom here we need to go down and see what we can find. Your guide (remember you have 2 guests to one guide as standard at NAD Lembeh) will find things for you. If needed they will help you with their spotting torch as you take pictures to make sure you don’t lose the subject. After you’ve had a few shots they will ask you to switch out with your buddy.

Common subjects such as mantis shrimps, flounders and slow moving subjects just as jellyfish will be pointed out to you and the guide will move on to look for rarer subjects. Use this opportunity with flounders to practice the skill of not losing the subject. If the guide is staying right by you, and making a lot of noise you are shooting something special that he does not want to lose, and he will call over other divers to share the subject after an amount of time. Please also remember that the guide’s eyes are not hidden behind your camera, so they will try to position themselves in a way that minimises their exposure to camera flashes.

raja ampatFrom Lembeh we fly to Sorong and board the Damai 1 liveaboard for a week long trek through the unforgettable waters of Raja Ampat. From the Dampier Strait which manta rays frequent to Misool to find the Tasseled Wobbegong shark all swimming along some of the worlds most majestic and overwhelming reefs. Raja Ampat is a wide angle photographers playground offering endless photo opportunities

Diving in Raja Ampat is breathtaking, with the marine life thriving from the sea floor to the surface and the colourful reef teeming with activity. There are sites that are so pristine and packed with growth, that a photographer is hard-pressed to find a spot to place a steadying finger. Exotic sea life and macro critters abound of course, and photo opportunities border on overwhelming.

Raja Ampat liveaboard trips offer divers the opportunity to explore the entire region. You have the colourful soft coral areas around the southern islands of Misool with the opportunity to see sharks and mobula rays. In the north you have the world famous current rich Dampier Straits with iconic dive sites like Cape Kri and Blue Magic. In the east you can visit pristine coral gardens and climb to the viewpoint above the lagoon at Penemu. In the north you can dive with mantas at Kawe and go critter hunting in Aljui Bay.
