Beqa Lagoon – Scuba diving enthusiasts will have a chance to plunge into the amazing underwater world at Beqa Lagoon Resort – VOTED ONE OF THE WORLD’S TOP DIVE RESORTS by Scuba Diving Magazine Readers! The GREAT BEQA REEF surrounds our island with 190 miles of spectacular coastline. You’ll enjoy some of the best diving in Fiji, the Soft Coral Capital of the world. With over 100 unique sites to discover, divers are able to explore at a variety of depths with sites as shallow as 15ft (5m) and others drop away to nearly 100ft (30m) and beyond. With year-round temperatures ranging between a cool 75˚f and a bathwater 84˚f divers are comfortable in 3mm to 5mm suits.

All of our boat dives are guided by PADI Divemasters who have been diving the waters of Beqa since they were children. Knowing every small hole and hiding place on these pristine reefs they are able to show divers all of the colorful and amazing treasures that these waters hold from Blue-ribbon eels, Clown Triggerfish, Leaf Scorpionfish to camouflaged day Octopus. All the while you dive in a rainbow of vivid pink and orange anthias and silver-blue fusiliers. Take some time to explore sunken wrecks or even feed your adrenaline with the Beqa ‘Big Fish/Shark Encounter ’, a dive that teases you with huge groupers, bait balls of massive Trevally, and the chance of being up close and personal with 9 different species of sharks including tiger sharks. Why not even travel out to the edge of the reef and dive along under the famous Frigates surf break, enjoying your lunch on the boat as you watch waves crash, and sneaking in that third dive before heading back to the resort and happy hour.

Roatan – January 13-20, 2024

October 25, 2020/in Dive Travel/by Steve Philbrook

Join Aquaventure instructor Adam Payeur as we kick off the New Year in Roatan!

The Diving

The Mesoamerican Reef is the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere. Spanning across the coast of 4 countries and nearly 700 miles, this reef boasts an astounding biodiversity of marine species with 65 species of stony coral, 350 species of mollusk and over 500 species of fish in addition to rare endangered and protected animals like Sea Turtles and Manatees. Divers from all over the world travel to the Mesoamerican Reef for the opportunity to explore the secret underwater treasures buried beneath the waves.

The reef itself begins just minutes from shore, with plateaus at 10ft, 20ft, 45ft and then the amazing wall that drops away in places to over 2000+ feet. The ocean offshore is generally very calm and this area doesn’t experience too many strong currents, meaning the conditions here are perfect for divers of all levels, from beginners to the most advanced diver.  You can take the plunge and discover world famous dive sites such as West End Wall, Texas, Mandy’s Eel Garden, Blue Channel, Hole in the Wall, the El Aguila Wreck and many more. Whether your passion is for swimthroughs, wrecks, caves, walls, or stunning shallow reefs-Roatan has it all!

Over the reef you will be amazed as you discover countless trumpetfish, trunkfish, drum fish, hogfish, crabs, lobsters, scorpionfish, cowfish, filefish, eels and maybe even a squid or two. For those who love macro we also have a good population of nudibranchs, seahorses, pipefish, pipehorses, blennies, worms, sea spiders and many species of shrimp. Keep your eyes peeled on the sand and rubble patches for jawfish, flounders, mantis shrimp, conch and stingrays.  The reef itself is made up of a smorgasbord of hard and soft corals, corallimorphs, sea fans, tunicates, anemones and sponges of all colours, shapes and sizes.

The ResortMayan Princess

We will be staying at the Mayan Princess.  Enjoy the 250ft blue lagoon pool & heated 8 person jacuzzi, free in-villa & public area wifi, beach volleyball, board games, book exchange, and canopied shade beds & lounge chairs. Little Cayman – March 9-16, 2024

January 21, 2020/in Dive Travel/by Steve Philbrook

Join Aquaventure instructor Hannu Koho as he heads to Little Cayman.

Immerse yourself in the experience that is Little Cayman Beach Resort—designed by divers to provide guests with the ultimate enjoyment of world-class diving that’s just minutes away. Bask in an intimate environment where our staff remember your name and preferences to provide you with personalized services, above and below the water.

Cayman Islands diving is mostly current-free, which is optimal for new divers, divers who wants to move at their own pace, and underwater photographers who may want to spend their entire dive at one location, waiting for the perfect shot.
All of the dive sites are moored, which marks the beginning and ending points of that dive. Our dive masters will brief the location, establish dive limits, and draw a map of the tour they’ll lead. As long as divers remain in buddy teams and stick with the predetermined limits, it’s their option to follow the tour or go off on their own.
For those who follow, the tour lasts 35 to 40 minutes. By the time they’re back at the mooring and know that the boat is overhead, most divers feel comfortable enough to continue exploring on their own until their time is up or they run low on air.

Reef Divers provides the personalized valet dive services that many guests don’t even know they want until they experience it.
Reef Divers takes the work out of your diving—handling the heavy lifting and care of your boat-dive gear, from your first dive with us through your last dive (unless you’d prefer to do it yourself). We rinse, dry, and store your BCD and regulator daily, so they’re set up and ready for your next day’s diving. The only finger you’ll have to lift is the one to point out your gear as you relax in the boat, ready to go diving.
At the top of the dock, we have separate rinse tanks for photo equipment, wetsuits, and general dive gear, plus a drying room for wetsuits so you don’t have to take them to your room.

Red Sea Aggressor & Nile River Cruise – November 30-December 12, 2024

January 20, 2020/in Dive Travel/by Steve Philbrook

Red Sea Liveaboard dates December 30-7 / Nile River cruise December 7-12. Dates do not yet include travel days.

Red Sea Aggressor Liveaboard – November 30-December 11, 2022

Join Steve & Jolene Philbrook on this amazing adventure! The Red Sea is a world class destination! We will be staying on the Aggressor III on the South itinerary. If you like seeing beautiful soft corals, large sealife, and cool wrecks this trip is for you. Below are a sample of some of the dive sites we will be diving!

BIG BROTHER: The Brothers (Big Brother and Little Brother, or in Arabic, ‘El Akhawein’) are two small islands in The Red Sea. They are situated 67 km out to sea from Al Qusayr. Above water, Big Brother features a lighthouse which was built by the British in 1883 and is manned by the Egyptian military. Underwater, there are two wrecks: Numidia and Aida. The walls of Big Brother plunge down into the blue at an almost-vertical angle. Shallow swim-throughs are concealed in the wall on the west side of the site making them fun to discover. Hard and soft corals, including some Gorgonian Fans cover the reef and the ubiquitous Anthias are found in the thousands. Fish of all sizes and species live here, including large pelagic life such as Hawksbill Turtles, Grey Reef Sharks, Thresher Sharks, Longimanus (from October/November), and occasionally, Hammerhead Sharks.

LITTLE BROTHER: Little Brother is, as the name suggests, the smaller of the two islands and is located 1 km to the south of Big Brother. Much like Big Brother, the currents can be strong or not present at all and they often change at a moment’s notice, adding to the adventure and excitement. Deep walls surround the island with a glorious plateau in the north. Here, it feels like diving in an aquarium with a huge variety of marine life including the larger Hawksbill Turtles, Grey Reef Sharks, Thresher Sharks, and Hammerhead Sharks. The ‘Gorgonian Forest’ lies in the south east of the site. Longnose Hawkfish perch on the large Gorgonians, however, their shy temperament means they can be a challenge to photograph!

DAEDALUS: This large reef, also referred to as Abu El Kizan, is found 80 km offshore from Marsa Alam. A lighthouse which was built in 1861 by the British stands tall on the small artificial island in the centre of the reef. Today it is manned by the Egyptian military. Currents tend to be much more predictable here, and divers have an excellent opportunity to spot large pelagic life such as schooling Ham

Untitled photo

merhead Sharks, Thresher Sharks which are commonly seen in the north. Manta Rays can be found anywhere (from March – October), and Grey Reef Sharks and Whitetip Reef Sharks patrol the reef walls. Whale Sharks occasionally pass by in the summer months. Broccoli Corals in a range of candy colours grow out from the reef on all sides. There are pristine hard coral formations in the north and east especially, while overhangs are home to schools of Glass Sweepers. The south plateau is covered in yellow Litophyton Arboreum and Pulsing Xenia. The west has two spectacular sights… ‘Anemone City’ is a section of the reef wall which is covered in Magnificent Anemone. Further down to the south west is another section of the wall which is covered in Elephant Ear Coral. In terms of topography, the very north of the reef is concave. Many different fish such as Wrasse, Parrot Fish, Rabbit Fish, and Unicorn Fish congregate on top of the reef in the clear, shallow water.

Elphinstone is a very famous, cigar-shaped reef which sits 6 km out to sea from Marsa Alam. There is a long plateau in the north and south of Elphinstone with the rest of the reef being a steep, colourful wall rich in hard and soft corals. Currents are variable, and can be strong or not present at all. While shark sightings are not guaranteed, the Longimanus cruises in the shallows in the season, and every so often divers encounter Hammerhead Sharks, Grey Reef Sharks, Silky Sharks, and Manta Rays. Barracuda hang in the blue, and Cornet Fish use divers for cover while they hunt the Anthias.

Truk Lagoon – March 6-15, 2025

January 19, 2020/in Dive Travel/by Steve Philbrook

Dates are approximate and may fluctuate when flights are scheduled. Liveaboard dates are March 8-15

Join Aquaventure as we head to Micronesia’s Truk Lagoon (Chuuk Lagoon). Here your chance to jump in and dive the world’s best shipwrecks!

We will be staying on the Truk Odyssey. The Odyssey boasts 9 very spacious staterooms and a comfortable entertainment lounge. The Odyssey is 132 feet long, with a 24 foot beam and draft of 6 feet, built entirely of steel.

Chuuk is a state within the Federation of Micronesia, and Truk (or Chuuk) lagoon is a lagoon located here which has a lot of history in it. In World War II this lagoon was used as a Japanese naval base, but then in 1944 the United States attacked the lagoon during “operation hailstone.” During this attack, more than 60 ships were sunk and more than 200 airplanes went down. About 70 years later this has become an opportunity for more than 48 wreck dive sites to be created. The waters here are filled with many historical war artifacts. This is definitely a mecca for wreck divers.  The water is at quite a temperate temperature throughout the year, (78-86 degrees Fahrenheit). The wrecks lay between 30ft and 200ft. Just as most of the Micronesia area, the dry season which runs from December to April is the best time to go, even though you can dive there all year round. It would be even more beneficial for you to be a Nitrox diver, then you can explore even more whilst on your Chuuk (Truk) Lagoon liveaboard.

The Truk lagoon was once referred to as the “Ghost fleet of Truk lagoon” as many thought the souls of the 3000 people who died here were haunting the area and it definitely adds to the eerie but impressive feeling of the dives. Along with the wrecks themselves, many of their cargo holds were completely filled, so you will see things ranging from tanks to bulldozers, motorcycles, boxes of ammunition, weapons, and even smaller things such as cutlery and other personal belongings. After so many years of being submerged, they have all created their own little marine ecosystems with sponges and corals growing left, right, and center. You will not be the only ones swimming around this area as Grey reef sharks are often spotted here. Along with them, multiple other marine species are spotted from time to time including stingrays, eagle rays, turtles, jellyfish, and schools of colorful, tropical fish.
