Guanaja October 2-9, 2021

ONLY 2 Spots Left!

Join Drew Gerling and the Tootsie Pop Divers to this private Island for a weeks worth of diving! We will be staying in the Cabanas at Clarks Cay. Imagine one island, 20 guests, almost as many staff, and a private waterpark guaranteed to bring the kid out in anyone!

The Clark’s Cay Team, divers themselves, know their guests enjoy nothing more than being in the water. Any water, all the time.

So, in 2017, while renovating the island amenities, they decided to build a private waterpark for their guests’ enjoyment during their “surface intervals!”

The waterpark originally included a spa and an infinity pool with a waterslide entering a meandering lazy river, complete with a tunnel and waterfall.

In 2019, the Team expanded the waterpark “toys” to include some giant inflatable ride-on floats, and just off the sandy beach, a water trampoline. Paddleboards are now available in addition to kayaks. And lest we forget to mention it – the PADI dive operation offers up to three boat dives daily!

Diving

There are 50+ named Guanaja dive sites, another 6 or so “kept secret” by the Clark’s Cay dive staff for their guests only. More dive sites being discovered every day along the barrier reef off Guanaja and around the numerous cays that surround the island. Below is some information on just a few of our favorite Guanaja dive sites.

Visibility is generally around 100 feet/30 meters. During the rainy season (roughly October to January) visibility can dip below the usual, though we are always able to scout out the areas that offer the best conditions. Currents are mostly mild to non-existent.

More than 50 rarely visited dive sites offer a mixture of pinnacles, vertical walls, lava tunnels, and wrecks

Guanaja’s fringing reef is a protected marine reserve making it an ideal spot for scuba diving and snorkeling nearly anywhere offshore the mainland. Part of a volcanic and coral mountain range called The Bonacca Ridge, Guanaja marks the beginning of the second largest barrier reef in the world – the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. It offers a mixture of pinnacles, vertical walls, lava tunnels and wrecks including the nearby Jado Trader, one of the most sought-after wrecks in the Caribbean. It also boasts nearly every species of coral growing in the Caribbean Sea, including several species of rare black coral, and sponges of all colors, shapes and sizes.

Nearly all of the sites offer lively shallow terraces that are perfect for snorkeling as well as scuba diving. Separate snorkel tours are offered to ensure you are taken to a site that is guaranteed for good snorkeling. When joining the scuba divers, we also do our best to accommodate sites that work well for divers and snorkelers.

Expect to see plenty of silverside sardines as well as glassy sweepers, groupers, barracudas, huge groupers, yellowtails, moray eels, and swarms of silverside sardines, sharks, eagle rays, and plenty of reef fish

Truk Lagoon Micronesia February 26-March 7, 2022

ONLY 9 SPOTS LEFT!

Join Erik Payeur & Steve Philbrook on this amazing adventure diving the sunken WWII shipwrecks from the Japanese Imperial Navy in Truk Lagoon.

During World War II, Truk Lagoon was the Empire of Japan’s main base in the South Pacific theatre. Truk was a heavily fortified base for Japanese operations against Allied forces in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, serving as the forward anchorage for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN).

By early 1944, the U.S. forces amassed a huge armada of top line carriers, battleships, cruisers, destroyers and submarines for a major surprise sweep against Truk on February 16th, 17th and 18th. This attack, coded “Operation Hailstone”, caught the Japanese totally unaware, leading to one of the most successful U.S. engagements of WWII.

We will be staying at Blue Lagoon Resort. Blue Lagoon is a quant resort in Truk Lagoon. It still has many of the war artifacts on its premises. You will be surrounded by history the entire time you’re there. Truk Lagoon is considered to be the BEST wreck diving destination in the world! Dive iconic wreck like the Fijikawa Maru, Sankisan Maru, Nippo Maru, San Fransisco Maru, Hein Maru, Airplanes, and more!

Truk Lagoon offers diving for all levels on the same wrecks. Whether you’re a novice, seasoned, professional, or tech diver Truk Lagoon is for you! Nitrox, mixed gas, and extra tanks are available.

**PLASE READ** – This is a recreational trip. Although some dives can exceed recreational limits (130 ft) most dives will be within the 130 ft depth limit. An advanced certification is highly recommended!

Raja Ampat & Lembeh Strait April 14-29, 2022

Call for waiting list

raja ampatJoin Steve & Jolene to these two amazing underwater paradises! Raja Ampat & Lembeh Strait offer some of the most diverse diving anywhere! From the incredible muck diving of Lembeh Strait to the spectacular coral reefs of Raja Ampat, these Indonesian destinations deliver an incredible experience you will never forget!

We start our journey at NAD on Lembeh Strait. Here you will encounter some of the world’s most unique and crazy critters. A macro photographer’s dream! Some of the critters you can encounter are various species of frogfish, cuttlefish, octopus (including the deadly Blue Ring), ornate pipefish, various crabs & shrimps, and many species of seahorses.
NAD-Lembeh Resort and the Lembeh Strait are famous all over the world for the peerless macro and muck diving. NAD-Lembeh is expert in Photography.

The Lembeh Strait region offers more than just face-to-face encounters with weird and wonderful critters. We also have wall diving, technical diving, big fish dives but most importantly – a lot of muck and sand.

What is Blackwater Diving?

https://aquaventurescuba.com/black-water-diving/

Blackwater diving can be broadly described as dropping in the water and looking for planktonic / larval forms of marine creatures. Beyond that there are a few methods you can use depending on what depth of water you are prepared to hang over:

  • ‘Bonfire’ diving is where you put some lights on the sand to attract plankton.
  • ‘Blackwater drift’ is where you attach lights to a hang line and drift through deep water. All going well you will not see the bottom.
  • ‘Black ops’ this is the most difficult style where we drift without any strong lights in deep ocean water.

pygmy seahorseFrom here we need to go down and see what we can find. Your guide (remember you have 2 guests to one guide as standard at NAD Lembeh) will find things for you. If needed they will help you with their spotting torch as you take pictures to make sure you don’t lose the subject. After you’ve had a few shots they will ask you to switch out with your buddy.

Common subjects such as mantis shrimps, flounders and slow moving subjects just as jellyfish will be pointed out to you and the guide will move on to look for rarer subjects. Use this opportunity with flounders to practice the skill of not losing the subject. If the guide is staying right by you, and making a lot of noise you are shooting something special that he does not want to lose, and he will call over other divers to share the subject after an amount of time. Please also remember that the guide’s eyes are not hidden behind your camera, so they will try to position themselves in a way that minimises their exposure to camera flashes.

raja ampatFrom Lembeh we fly to Sorong and board the Damai 1 liveaboard for a week long trek through the unforgettable waters of Raja Ampat. From the Dampier Strait which manta rays frequent to Misool to find the Tasseled Wobbegong shark all swimming along some of the worlds most majestic and overwhelming reefs. Raja Ampat is a wide angle photographers playground offering endless photo opportunities

Diving in Raja Ampat is breathtaking, with the marine life thriving from the sea floor to the surface and the colourful reef teeming with activity. There are sites that are so pristine and packed with growth, that a photographer is hard-pressed to find a spot to place a steadying finger. Exotic sea life and macro critters abound of course, and photo opportunities border on overwhelming.

Raja Ampat liveaboard trips offer divers the opportunity to explore the entire region. You have the colourful soft coral areas around the southern islands of Misool with the opportunity to see sharks and mobula rays. In the north you have the world famous current rich Dampier Straits with iconic dive sites like Cape Kri and Blue Magic. In the east you can visit pristine coral gardens and climb to the viewpoint above the lagoon at Penemu. In the north you can dive with mantas at Kawe and go critter hunting in Aljui Bay.
